Pearl was on 1/16 of oxygen when I got to the hospital today and I was very frustrated. She had a spell with a feeding so the nurse turned her up for a little while. Soon after, the Dr. came through to do her rounds. This is the same Dr. that we had 8 weeks ago when they were born so she knows the girls. Her thinking is that they need to focus on the feeds rather than weening the oxygen. If she needs more oxygen with feedings then they want her on more oxygen all the time. Arg! Just when my hopes were up that she could come home oxygen free. They are giving her a shot though so they turned her back down to 1/32 and she is there for now until she has a spell and then they will probably turn her up and leave her.
As for the feeds, she is hit or miss. Some days she seems like she totally gets it and will eat a bottle in about 10 minutes. Other times she seems eager and you give it to her and she stares at you like she can't possibly do it because she is too tired. It still takes a lot out of her to finish a bottle. They have tube fed her a few times when she just couldn't finish. Once she is eating every feed from a bottle they will put her in an open crib and see if she can keep her temperature up. Once she can do that, they may or may not work on weening the oxygen before she comes home. I'm optimistic that she can do it so we will see. The Dr. is less optimistic and said she would be surprised if she didn't come home on oxygen. We like a challenge here in the Fawcett family so we will see how she does. I asked how long she would be on it if she did come home with it and they said probably 3-6 months. She has a diagnosis of BPD which is basically chronic lung disease. Once her lungs grow there will be enough healthy tissue that the damaged tissue won't be that big of a deal. As for now when she is small, they just have to be careful. She is more likely to have issues when she is sick etc.
Malorie is good. We have a weight check today to see what a pig she is.
